It is used to study antibiotic resistance and penetration limitations, the synergy between multiple antibiotics and certain bloodstream infections.<\/p>\n<p>Ampicillin is a broad-spectrum, semi-synthetic, \u03b2-lactam penicillin with bactericidal activity. As a member of the penicillin family, it is susceptible to \u03b2-lactamase, which hydrolyzes the \u03b2-lactam ring. It acts against several gram-positive, gram-negative infections as well as anaerobic bacteria. This compound binds to and inactivates penicillin-binding proteins (PBP) located on the inner membrane of the bacterial cell wall. This inactivation interferes with the cross-linkage of peptidoglycan chains essential for bacterial cell wall strength and rigidity.
