Blasticidin S inhibits protein synthesis in bacteria and eukaryotes. Blasticidin causes tRNA to bond more strongly to the P site of the large ribosomal subunit while simultaneously deforming the tRNA, thus inhibiting proper translation. Blasticidin S is used as a selection agent for transformed cells that contain the resistance genes bls, bsr, or BSD.
