Spectinomycin dihydrochloride pentahydrate is used as an aminocyclitol antibiotic derived from streptomyces spectabilis. It inhibits the 30S ribosomal subunit of bacteria and interrupts protein synthesis and peptide elongation, leading to bacterial cell death. Spectinomycin is used as an anti-bacterial agent to prevent contamination and as a selection agent for resistant bacteria and plant cells.
