Kanamycin Sulfate, generated by specific strains of Streptomyces kanamyceticus, belongs to the class of aminoglycoside antibiotics. It has been used in tissue culture media. It inhibits growth of gram-positive, gram-negative bacteria and mycoplasmas in cell culture. It acts by binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit, inhibiting translocation and eliciting miscoding, bacterial protein synthesis. It can also be used as a selection agent for cells transformed with kanamycin B resistance gene.
