Ampicillin Sodium Salt, 0.1g/mL Active Solution, STERILE
Ampicillin is used to select bacteria cells with specific resistance during general microbiology studies. It is used to study antibiotic resistance and penetration limitations, the synergy between multiple antibiotics and certain bloodstream infections.
Ampicillin is a broad-spectrum, semi-synthetic, β-lactam penicillin with bactericidal activity. As a member of the penicillin family, it is susceptible to β-lactamase, which hydrolyzes the β-lactam ring. It acts against several gram-positive, gram-negative infections as well as anaerobic bacteria. This compound binds to and inactivates penicillin-binding proteins (PBP) located on the inner membrane of the bacterial cell wall. This inactivation interferes with the cross-linkage of peptidoglycan chains essential for bacterial cell wall strength and rigidity. Consequently, there is an interruption in the bacterial cell wall synthesis which results in the weakening of the bacterial cell wall causing cell lysis.
